one bright point
Location: Magnetic Island
Client: Meridien Pty Ltd
The design results in a balance of an integration of the buildings with the existing landscape whilst achieving an adequate amount of habitable floor area on the site. The materials and colour scheme will be sympathetic to the environment and meld with the natural colours of the site. Planters are included to both the building and the rock face, to provide shade to the buildings and users, and to re-vegetate the devastated bare rock face and ‘re-green’ the site. The massing of the buildings is derived from an emphasised stepping, both in plan and in height, to begin to mimic the unique rock formations of the island and the particular rising rock face that forms the backdrop to the site.
The design incorporates breezeways, large roof overhangs and awnings, indoor/outdoor living spaces and louvered walls. These not only aid in natural ventilation but give a beach-house feel to the apartments, resulting in an environmentally sensitive and energy efficient design.
