An important element in the project is a steel screen that has the multiple uses of providing sun shading to the west, safety for students and an engaging presence in its context. The screen is an abstracted form that is derived from the life of Mary Ward and connects the building to the school through its strong symbolism.
The pilgrim life and teaching of Mary Ward took her to London, Liege, Cologne, Paris, Lyon, Munich, Rome, Naples, Vienna and Prague. The steel screen on the building is a representation of this journey and indicates these original places. The form of the screen is generated by locating these places as points on the façade and joining them to represent the journeys of Mary Ward. The resulting shapes and forms provide a subtly changing face to the screen.
